How We Got Started:

How We Got Started:

Darius Baker and John Scofield became partners in 1981, opening a cabinet shop named Custom Kitchens & Furniture. As market demand shifted toward full scale remodeling in the mid 1980’s, they closed the shop and started D & J Kitchens & Baths, Inc. They chose to specialize in interior remodels with kitchens and baths taking center stage. In 2000, Darius and John began to focus on growing the company to what it is today, with several employees including an in house designer and a highly skilled field staff capable of any remodeling project. In 2011 John retired, but Darius and his company continue to focus on producing quality interior remodels in classic Sacramento neighborhoods. Today, D & J has completed over 600 remodeling projects and has several Contractor of the Year (CoTY) awards.

Darius Baker, CEO:

The company’s founder, Darius Baker, has known he wanted to build things since he was 12 years old. In 1981, he made an agreement to build a set of kitchen cabinets in exchange for rent on the house he lived in at the time. That agreement turned out successful and he never looked back. At that time, Baker was serving his country as an Air Force Reservist. He completed 29 years of service and retired in 2000. Since then, he has been consistently immersed in the day to day business of the company. Baker has served on the NARI Board of Directors (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) at the National level, and he wrote the Certified Kitchen & Bath Remodeler program for the association. He has also served as the National Chairman of the groups’ educational committee and marketing committee.

Amanda Barnhart, CKBR, Lead Designer:

Amanda has spent the last 15 years specializing in kitchen and bath design. In 2004 she became D&J's first employee. Amanda is passionate about organization and creating beautiful, functional spaces for her clients.

Nicole Durden, CID, CRPM, Lead Designer:

Nicole earned her degree in Interior Design from Sacramento State University in 2003. She has spent the past 14 years working in the design/build community here in Sacramento and in the bay area.

Tony Lunsford, CKBR, Production Manager:

Tony has been in the construction and remodeling industry since 1987. His experience ranges from new home building through remodeling of existing homes. Since 2001 he has been in production and project management. It is his priority to complete D&J projects in the highest quality and on time.

What does NARI Certification mean to you?

Deciding to remodel your home is a big decision. Outside of buying your home, it may be the single biggest investment you make. You need to know that the remodeling contractor you choose is a full-time, dedicated remodeling professional. NARI’s certification program offers this assurance through its extensive screening and testing process. Only full-time, professional remodeling contractors are eligible for certification by NARI. You can be assured that any time you hire a NARI certified remodeling contractor, you are hiring an individual who has made a strong commitment to the professionalism of the remodeling industry and to his or her business. And because remodelers are not eligible for certification until they have been actively involved in the remodeling industry for at least five years, you know that the NARI certified remodeling professional you hire has had a number of years to develop the experience and skills that can only be gained through extensive hands-on practice.
